"One of the most enduring partnerships on the jazz circuit, Julie Edwards and Kevin Dearden, aired their telepathic talents and made a rare appearance at Huddersfield Jazz in the congenial cellar at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield last Saturday. She has matured into an acclaimed jazz singer, ably supported by Kevin, who after a long spell as a saxophonist has now made the guitar his favoured instrument." Yorksire Post "She's a charmer that Julie Edwards....Julie is a singer with a wonderfully expressive voice, a warm personality and an easy rapport with an audience. A delicious interpretation of 'Peel Me A grape' nicely summed up her approach, though her impressive range and varied intonation did good things with the contrasting moods of 'Day In, Day Out' and 'In the We Small Hours Of The Morning', while by 'Mercy, Mercy' she had really let loose and was scatting with the best of them. The chemistry between Julie and other half, Kevin Dearden on guitar and saxes, is the foundation of all that's good about their band." Wakefield Express "The
multi-talented Dearden was in good form kicking off the proceedings.
Edwards, meanwhile demonstrated she's the real deal in the singing stakes.
She lit the evening with her star quality. 'Lazy Afternoon' was a personal
favourite of mine, but if your taste inclined to the blues she demonstrated
an unexpected powerhouse quality to her voice with a climactic 'Since
I Fell For You'. Small venue jazz at its best." Hull
Mail "Our entertainers were the acclaimed Julie Edwards Quintet. Julie is a fine jazz vocalist with a soft tonal quality that can suddenly burst into life with venomous power but then as easily shink back to beguiling charm...quite superb. Kevin Dearden was on top form." Grimsby Telegraph "The concert started with a few notes on the double bass leading in Julie's voice, whose diction, range and phrasing were impeccable throughout. Her rendition of the plaintive "Don't Explain" went down particularly well with the audience. Kevin's recent addition of doubling on jazz guitar has opened up a new sound for the quintet." Filey Festival "Top
notch jazz singer and performer. "Her
performance was spellbinding throughout - such quality. I can only say
that every
member of the audience felt that they |
