Monday 8 June 2010 Here I am again at last. Not much of a blogger I guess, but I really want to tell you about a new project which we have been rehearsing for a couple of months now. Called North of Havana; it's a little Latin outfit playing material loosely in the traditional Cuban style. The rhythm section consists of Chris Sykes playing combinations of congas, bongos, cajon and hand percussion, sometimes all at once it seems, while Kevin is playing a nylon string acoustic guitar covering both the guitar and bass parts. I'm on lead vocals (and shakey shaker) singing lyrics mostly in Spanish, not surprisingly, with backing vocals from the other band members. The solo chair is occupied by the virtuosic flute player Simon Prince, who you've just got to check out. The sound is stripped out, groovy and kinda jazzy. As yet I don't know what it'll be like to listen to, but I tell you what, it's great fun to be in. We're recording next week, so I hope to be uploading demos asap. Hey, I might even make a MySpace page for it, if I can bear to. Watch this space! By the way, incase you are looking for or know anyone who needs a party band, our Party Animals (5 or 7 piece) playing pop music for functions, weddings and corporate occasions, is available for bookings. Check out the link www.partyanimalsband.co.uk or drop us an email: mail@kevindearden.co.uk. Look forward to hearing from you. Want to comment or add to this blog? julieedwardsmail@tiscali.co.uk |

*********************************************************************************************** "Well, I've known Kev and Julie for about 7 years. They already had a great set in those days but their musicianship and performances have just kept improving. If you're looking at this site then you'll probably know the biogs and history. These are people who don't stand still. It's no surprise they now play top jazz festivals, get airplay from venerable broadcasters and are are planning their expansion into Europe... more ***********************************************************************************************JTA 26/11/09 "I had the great pleasure recently of attending a jazz gig at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield. The band playing that night was the Julie Edwards/Kevin Dearden Quintet and what a wonderful performance they gave to the packed house. Julie and I have been friends for over twenty years now and in that period I have watched her grow as a vocalist and musician; it has been a source of great delight to me. Then she teamed up with Kevin in the year 2000 or thereabouts and it was a dream team as far as I was concerned. Both Julie's singing and Kevin's playing on the alto saxophone and their sensitive treatment of a song were reminiscent of Billie Holiday and Lester... more |
